Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is an invocation of the Virgin Mary, revered in many parts of the world, and whose principal place of worship is in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared four times on the hill of Tepeyac to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (now St. Juan Diego). In his fourth appearance the Virgin asked Juan Diego to visit the first bishop of Mexico and bring him roses. Juan Diego took them in his cloak, and when unfolded it before the bishop Juan de Zumarraga, what he saw was the image of tne Virgin Mary with indigenous face.

Our vector image is based on a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe on a cloak.

There are several Marian titles with the name of Our Lady of Guadalupe: one is in Mexico, one in Peru and the rest are in Spain. In Mexico City is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe , where the procession in her honor are led by dancers called matlachines" until they reach the Basilica. In the town of Guadalupe, Peru, is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and is the patron saint of the Peoples of the North and Exalted Queen of Peru, crowned by the Apostolic Nuncio of Pope Pius XII in 1954. In the town of Guadalupe in Caceres, Spain, is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, in the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe. On the island of La Gomera, Spain, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and is the patroness of the island. In Ubeda, Jaen, Spain, is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of the city, at the Shrine of Gavellar. In the hamlet of Guadalupe, Murcia, is its patron and is the holder of the parish. In Fuenterrabia / Hondarribia, Guipúzcoa, Basque Country, on Mount Guadalupe, the shrine of Guadalupe is so called because the Virgin appeared there.

The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe is Dec. 12
