Stations of the Cross (Via crucis):

"Via Crucis" is a word that comes from Latin and means "Way of the Cross". Also known as the Stations of the Cross, or Via Dolorosa. The Stations of the Cross is the most remarkable episodes of the Passion of Jesus Christ, since he was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane to his crucifixion at Golgotha, his burial, and resurrection from the dead.

Since 1342, the Franciscan Order was responsible for the custody of the holy places of "Holy Land", which contributed greatly to the spread and devotion of the Stations of the Cross, the path traveled by the pilgrims recalling the Passion of Christ, known as the "Via Sacra ".

Traditional Stations of the Cross:

Since the seventeenth century, traditionally the Stations of the Cross is represented by these 14 scenes or moments:

First Station: Jesus is condemned to death.
Second Station: Jesus carries his cross.
Third Station: Jesus falls the first time.
Fourth Station: Jesus meets his mother.
Fifth Station: Jesus is helped by Simon to carry his cross.
Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
Seventh Station: Jesus falls the second time.
Eighth Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
Ninth Station: Jesus falls the third time.
Tenth Station: Jesus' clothes are taken away.

Current Stations of the Cross:

On Good Friday 1991, Pope John Paul II introduced a new form of devotion, called "Scriptural Way of the Cross", a version of the Way of the Cross which is much more consistent with the biblical stories of the New Testament; and Pope Benedict XVI approved, in 2007, this set of stations for meditation and public celebration.

The current Stations of the Cross begins with the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and ends with the Resurrection of Christ:

First Station: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. (Mc 14, 32-36)

Second Station: Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested. (Mc 14,43-46)

Third Station: Jesus is condemned by the Sanhedrin. (Mc 14, 55, 60-62,64)
