St. Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandria was a Christian martyr of the fourth century.

She was born in 290 in Alexandria (Egypt) and was noted for her great intelligence and studies.

At the age of 18, she reproached the Roman emperor Maximino, his fierce persecution of Christians and his adoration of false gods. The emperor called his sages to argue with her, but being unable to rebut their arguments, they converted to Christianity. Maximino her imprisoned and flogged. The Empress, wishing to meet her, visited her in prison accompanied by the chief of the troops and both became Christians, Then Maximino condemned her to die in the wheel (an instrument of torture) but the apparatus was miraculously damaged.

Maximino finally made her decapitate. Her head moved to Mount Sinai, where later a church was built in his honor.

St. Catherine of Alexandria is considered along with St. Margaret and St. Barbara as one of the most useful saints in heaven.

Its celebration is celebrated the 25 of November.
