Virgin of Montserrat

The Virgin of Montserrat is the patron saint of Catalonia. Her name in Catalan is Mare de Déu de Montserrat, but is popularly called: La Moreneta.

The image of the Virgin of Montserrat was found inside a cave by some shepherds in the year 880. The bishop of Manresa wanted to move the image to Manresa, but it was impossible. The bishop interpreted it as the desire of the Virgin to remain in the place where she was found and ordered the construction of the hermitage of Santa Maria, origin of the current monastery.

Its day is celebrated on April 27.
