Scriptural Stations of the Cross:

On Good Friday 1991, Pope John Paul II introduced a new form of devotion, called "Scriptural Way of the Cross", a version of the Way of the Cross which is much more consistent with the biblical stories of the New Testament; and Pope Benedict XVI approved, in 2007, this set of stations for meditation and public celebration.

This new version of the Way of the Cross does not replace the traditional Way of the Cross.

The current Stations of the Cross begins with the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and ends with the Resurrection of Christ:

  • First Station: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. (Mc 14, 32-36)
  • Second Station: Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested. (Mc 14,43-46)
  • Third Station: Jesus is condemned by the Sanhedrin. (Mc 14, 55, 60-62,64)
  • Fourth Station: Jesus is denied by Peter. (Mc. 14, 66-72)
  • Fifth Station: Jesus is judged by Pilate. (Lc 23, 1-4,23-24)
  • Sixth Estación: Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns. (Mt. 27, 26-30)
  • Seventh Station: Jesus takes up his cross. (Jn 19, 16-17)
  • Eighth Station: Jesus is helped by Simon to carry his cross. (Mc 15,21)
  • Ninth Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem. (Lc 23, 27-28)
  • Tenth Station: Jesus is crucified. (Mc 15, 24-26)
  • Eleventh Station: Jesus promises his kingdom to the repentant thief. (Lc 23, 39-43)
  • Twelfth Station: Jesus entrusts Mary and John to each other. (Jn 19, 26-27)
  • Thirteenth Station: Jesus dies on the cross. (Lc 23, 44-46)
  • Fourteenth Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb. ( Jn 19,41-42)
  • Fifteenth Station: Jesus rises from the dead.

Reform of the Stations of the Cross by St. John Paul II:

On Good Friday 1991, Pope John Paul II created a new Stations of the Cross with 15 stations based on moments from the New Testament, since the previous Stations of the Cross included many passages from the apocryphal Gospels and traditional scenes, including Jesus' meeting with his mother, and the moment when St. Veronica wipes Jesus' face.

This new Way of the Cross begins with Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Olives and ends with his Resurrection.

It is used alternatively to the traditional one, but does not replace it.
