Our Lady of the Pillar
The Virgin of Pilar is an invocation of the Virgin Mary, whose main center of worship resides in the Basilica del Pilar, in Zaragoza (Spain).
Its origins date back to the year 40 of our era. According to Christian tradition, on the night of January 2, St. James the Greater was with his disciples by the Ebro River when "he heard the voices of angels singing and saw the Virgin Mary appear, standing on a marble pillar". The Blessed Virgin, who was still alive in mortal flesh, asked the Apostle that a church be built for her there, with the altar around the pillar where she was standing and promised that "this place will remain until the end of time so that the virtue of God may work wonders and marvels through my intercession with those who in their needs implore my patronage".
This was the first church dedicated in honor of the Blessed Virgin and the column is known as "El Pilar".
The festivities in honor of the Virgen del Pilar are celebrated in Zaragoza, beginning the weekend before October 12 and ending the first Sunday after October 12.
