Our Lady of Tejeda Coronated

Our Lady of Tejeda is the Patroness of Garaballa and the Marquisate of Moya, in the province of Cuenca.

According to popular tradition, in the year 1205, the Virgin appeared on the trunk of a yew tree to a shepherd named Juan, next to the cave where the shepherds of the area took refuge. From this event derives its name, being known as the Virgin of Tejeda or, in a more traditional way, as the "Virgen de Tejera".

After the apparition, a small hermitage was erected in her honor and, with the arrival of the Order of the Trinitarians, a complex including a church and a convent was built. In 1516, a devastating flood destroyed both buildings, only the image of the Virgin and the Blessed Sacrament being saved. Both were moved to the parish church of Garaballa until the construction of the new convent and the current Sanctuary was completed.

In 1693, faced with a severe drought that plagued the Marquisate of Moya, the image was moved there in rogation. Following this event, the tradition of celebrating a pilgrimage every seven years was born: on September 16, the Virgin of Tejeda is carried from her Sanctuary in Garaballa to Moya, where she remains for nine days.

Today, the Monastery of the Virgin of Tejeda, in Garaballa, is a prominent pilgrimage center that receives faithful throughout the year. Her major festival, known as the Septenary, takes place every seven years, between September 16 and 26.
