The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus is one of the great masterpieces of universal painting.

It was painted by Sandro Botticelli, Florentine painter, whose real name was Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi.

Botticelli used tempera on canvas for this work. The exact date of its creation is not known, but specialists place it between 1482 and 1484.

The model who posed for Botticelli as Venus was named Simonetta Cattaneo de Candia, also known as "the beautiful Simonetta".

The Birth of Venus depicts the goddess Venus on a shell, arriving on a beach from the sea, pushed by the breath of 2 winged gods, while on the shore the nymph "Primavera" prepares to cover her with a mantle of floral motifs.

This beautiful image measures 2785 mm wide x 1725 mm high and is currently in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
