Saint Francis of Assisi

Also called "the poor man of Assisi", he was born in the year 1181, in Assisi, Italy.

He was the founder of the Franciscan Order, the order of the Poor Clares and a third order composed of men and women of secular life, all created under the authority of the Catholic Church.

His form of religious life, austere and simple, living in the strictest poverty, created a movement of Christian renewal that strongly influenced the popular classes.

His simplicity and humility have made him a timeless icon representing the highest Christian spirituality. St. Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene to celebrate the birth of Jesus, it was a manger with the ox and the mule, but without the Child. With this symbolic representation he celebrated the night mass.

His feast is celebrated on October 4.
