Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe is an invocation of the Virgin Mary, an iconic figure of Mexican culture and venerated in much of the world, whose main center of worship is in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared four times on the hill of Tepeyac to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (now San Juan Diego).
In her fourth apparition the Virgin asked Juan Diego to appear before the first bishop of Mexico and bring him roses. Juan Diego took them in his ayate and when he unfolded it before the bishop Juan de Zumárraga, the image of St. Mary, dark and with indigenous features, came into view.
Our vector image is based on the Virgin of Guadalupe which is printed on the ayate.
There are several Marian invocations with the name of Virgin of Guadalupe: one is in Mexico, another in Peru and the rest are in Spain.
In Mexico City is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where the processions in her honor are led by dancers called "matlachines" until they reach the Basilica.
In the city of Guadalupe, in Peru, the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated, and is the Patron Saint of the Northern Peoples and Queen of Peru, crowned by the Apostolic Nuncio of Pope Pius XII in 1954.
In the town of Guadalupe, in Cáceres, Spain, the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated in the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe.
On the island of La Gomera, Spain, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated, and is the Patroness of the island.
In Úbeda, Jaén, Spain, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of the city, is venerated in the Sanctuary of Gavellar.
In the district of Guadalupe, Murcia, she is the patron saint and patroness of the parish.
In Fuenterrabia / Hondarribia, Guipuzcoa, Basque Country, on Mount Guadalupe, the hermitage of Guadalupe is so called because the Virgin appeared there.
It is celebrated on December 12.
