St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola was the founder of the Society of Jesus.

He was born in Gipuzkoa (Spain) and his birth name was Iñigo de Loyola, who changed Ignacio after his studies in Paris.

During his youth he was a military man, until the age of 30 when he was seriously injured in the battle of Pamplona (1521). During his long convalescence he read profusely about the life of Christ and the Saints. One night the Virgin Mary and Jesus appeared to him and that decided him to consecrate his life to religion.

In addition to creating the Society of Jesus, he also wrote the book "Exercitia spiritualia", a guide to spiritual exercises to be conducted under the direction of a spiritual director in a retreat without distractions of any kind.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a fervent evangelist and a great organizer.

His body is buried in the Church of Gesù in Rome.

The holiday of St. Ignatius of Loyola is July 31.
