Saint Isidore the Farmer

Saint Isidore the Farmer was born in Madrid in 1082, where he lived with his humble family, until he went to Torrelaguna, escaping from the Arab invasion. There he married Santa María de la Cabeza, in 1109, and 10 years later he returned to Madrid to work for the Vargas family, living in the house they had for the farm workers.

He was a farmer and carpenter, had a deep faith, devotion to the Virgin, and a charitable spirit that he devoted to the poor, with the help of his wife, who shared with him her love for the needy.

When St. Isidore died on November 30, 1172, at the age of 90, he was already considered a saint. He was buried first in the cemetery of the parish of St. Andrew, then he was transferred to the Church, since the rain unearthed his incorrupt body. Alfonso VIII in 1212 ordered a chest to be made to bury his body. He remained there until 1619, when he was beatified by the Holy See, with 438 approved miracles. During the reign of Carlos III, his body was moved to the Collegiate Church where it is today.

He is the patron saint of the town of Madrid and of farmers.

The day of Saint Isidore the Farmer is celebrated on May 15.
