St. Peter Baptist
St. Peter Baptist was born in San Esteban del Valle, Avila (Spain) on June 29, 1542, completed his ecclesiastical studies and was elected superior of several communities.
He traveled to Mexico where he founded several Franciscan monasteries, and to the Philippine Islands where he founded the Convent of San Francisco del Monte and several hospitals.
Later he traveled to Japan to spread the Catholic doctrine, there he founded convents, hospitals, leprosaria and schools, but due to the atmosphere of political and commercial intrigues that existed in Japan at that time, the Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered to put an end to the Christians and their influence on Japanese politics.
St. Peter Baptist of Avila was one of the 26 Christians crucified in 1597 in Nagasaki (Japan), who are known as the 26 martyrs of Japan.
The joint celebration of the crucified martyrs is on February 5 and their cult is widespread in Japan, particularly in Nagasaki.
