Our Lady of Urkupiña

The Virgin of Urkupiña, considered the Patroness of the National Integration of Bolivia, is an invocation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is venerated in the city of Quillacollo, Bolivia.

Legend has it that a little shepherd girl took her sheep every day to graze on a hill.
One day a beautiful lady appeared to her with a child in her arms, with whom she held conversations in the Quechua language, which delayed the girl's return home. When her parents asked her why she was late, she told them about the lady and the child.
Her parents wanted to see her too and called the parish priest to accompany them. When they arrived at the place, the Virgin was up on the hill and the shepherdess pointed towards the hill saying in Quechua: "Jaqaypiña urqupiña, urkupiña" which means: "she is already on the hill".

The people saw the Virgin vanish and in her place they found the image that they later took to the chapel of Quillacollo.

Since then it is known as the Virgin of Urkupiña.

Her feast is celebrated on August 15 in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
